Lemon Balm - Herb Of The Week

Happy St. Patricks Day!

I am going to share some great information today on one of my favorite herbs.
Lemon Balm

Good for so many things, it should become a staple in your herb garden.

People use lemon balm for a wide variety of uses. Lemon balm can flavor or garnish food and drinks, create refreshing lemon-tinged iced tea, be dried out and mixed in potpourri for its invigorating lemony scent, or be added to home remedies for its various medicinal properties. With all these uses and benefits, some people may want to grow a patch of lemon balm at home. Homeowners with lawns need to clear the grass to provide lemon balm with a suitable garden bed.

Read more: How to Grow Lemon Balm Instead of Grass | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/how_7624444_grow-lemon-balm-instead-grass.html#ixzz1pPvgdrMA

  •  1)  Select an appropriate site for the lemon balm's garden bed. Choose a site that receives full sun to partial shade throughout the day.

  • 2) Add a general-purpose fertilizer to the selected site. Till the grass in the area to a depth of 6 to 12 inches to create a garden bed for the lemon balm and mix the fertilizer into the soil. Remove any remaining clumps of roots or grass by hand after tilling.

  • Lemon Balm is wonderful for so many things.

    Insomnia and Anxiety

    • Lemon balm has traditionally been used as a mild sedative and treatment of sleep issues. Its calming properties make it helpful for relieving anxiety-related health problems, as well as insomnia. Studies have found that especially when combined with other calming herbs, such as valerian, hops and chamomile, lemon balm can help reduce anxiety and promote sleep. Keep in mind: Although there are no recognized drug interactions, it's always important to exercise caution when using sedative-hypnotic herbs.

    Herpes

    • Lemon balm is also said to have antibacterial properties, which can inhibit the growth and spread of viruses. As a topical treatment, it may help to heal the sores associated with the Herpes virus (HSV). According to research at the Maryland Medical Center, "in one study of 116 people with HSV, those who applied lemon balm cream to their lip sores experienced significant improvement in redness and swelling after only two days." Lemon balm is also effective as a topical treatment for wounds, cuts and scrapes.

    Indigestion

    • Lemon balm contains a plant chemical called eugenol, which calms muscle spasms and numbs tissue, making it a compelling cure for indigestion. As a tea it can ease spasms or dyspepsia related to anxiety, as the soothing infusion helps to expel gas from the stomach. Studies also demonstrate that lemon balm extract increases bile secretion and protects the gastrointestinal tract against ulcers. The tea is extremely gentle and soothing, making it suitable for even the most upset stomachs, as well as for children.

I hope you find all this information on lemon balm useful and add this wonderful plant to your own herb garden if you don`t already have it.

    Researching All Natural Sleep Aids

As someone who suffers from chronic insomnia. I am always on the look out for ways to catch some ZZZZZZZZZs.
It would be nice to get a straight 7 to 8 hours, but I`ll settle for a straight 4 hours. I have recently done some researching of my own on an all natural way to get some quality sleep.
I have come across some interesting findings. Some of these I will share with who ever wants to know. Be sure that I am not in the medical profession and this is  just general knowledge. I haven`t tried this yet, but I will keep my followers posted as to updates.

    I found this information on a google search;

Rose wants to know what is it about pumpkin seeds that help you fall asleep.  So she asked her friend Dr Narcolepsy “They are a natural source of carbohydrates, amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids with Vitamins B, C, D, E and K, zinc, calcium, potassium (beta carotene), niacin, lutein and phosphorous.  Pumpkins seeds have been used to treat prostate and bladder problems, but recently have been associated with depression and learning disabilities.”

Fresh and cooked pumpkin can be used in a number of recipes as a meal or in dessert. Eating pumpkin isn’t the only way to enjoy its natural benefits. Researchers have found new evidence linking tryptophan and some brain functions. Tryptophan is a chemical substance known as an amino-acid. Melatonin and serotonin are formed from tryptophan. Pumpkins are rich in tryptophan.  Dr Narcolepsy’s colleague Craig Hudson, a doctor in Toronto, took part in a controlled study that found the voluntary subjects that took tryptophan were able to cope with pressure much better than those that didn’t.  Those patients also experienced higher levels of mental well-being.

The sleep study concluded that each patient had a lower heart beat while at rest and videotaped them during the day to see how they performed with tryptophan.  Tryptophan helped them fall asleep faster with longer undisturbed sleep which in turn better mental awareness during waking hours and a more enjoyable sex life. Dr. Hudson has now started a company to produce and market a product based on the pumpkin seed extract he studied. The company is known as Biosential. The product is called Zenbev, a powder with a lemon flavor that can be made into a hot or cold beverage.   Zenbev is also available in the United States, where it is available at amazon.com.

I`m going to give it a shot, heck I`ve got nothing to loose and some ZZZZZs to hopefully gain out of it.

Also be watching for a new light moisturizing cream coming in the next week. Made using Red Raspberry Seed Oil being one of the most vital ingredients.
A little info on Red Raspberry Seed Oil.

Organic Raspberry Seed Oil possesses an exceptionally high proportion of alpha and gamma tocopherols (Vitamin E), vitamin A and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. In a study done on the properties of Organic Raspberry Seed Oil, the oil showed absorbance in the UV-B and UV-C ranges suggesting that it may be useful as a broad spectrum UV protectant in skin care formulations (Oomah et al, 2000). Red raspberry seed oil is rich in alpha linolenic acid suggesting pronounced anti-inflammatory properties, thus it may be an effective oil to use in the treatment of eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions.
Organic Red Raspberry Seed Oil may be used in lip balm, cream, sun protection, balms and other skin care formulations. Organic Raspberry Seed Oil can be added to any formulation to add protection against the sun. Please note, however, that you will not be able to determine the exact SPF of your product without testing and you cannot market SPF products without a license to do so. The usage of Organic Raspberry Seed Oil on the skin is not the equivalent of using a properly formulated SPF product. Many factors are involved in how a product works as a sunscreen including absorption rate and viscosity of the formulation.

New Clay Masks In The Shop

Do you want to see clearer, softer
skin with a natural rosy glow?

Then you`ve just got to try one of my new clay conditioning masks for your face!

Choose between the European Green Clay Mask

    Or

    The Rose Clay Mask!

The  Natural Rose Clay Mask is excellent for treating your face to a gentle exfoliating mask. It is excellent for sensitive skin.

The European Green Clay Mask is great for normal to oily skin.
Remove all those environmental impurities. I suggest using a cleansing facial mask at least once a week.
But I use one at least twice a week for myself.  Only you will find the perfect balance for your own skin type. You should start by using once a week to see how your skin reacts. If it becomes dry, then definitely use only once or twice a month.
Most complexions can take a deep cleansing at least once a week to remove environmental impurities, makeup and balance out the delicate skin of the face.
    I have provided a link for each mask;
